Born in Hiroshima in 1979. Graduated from Hokkaido University’s Faculty of Agriculture and completed a doctoral course at the university’s graduate school. After working as a researcher at the Snow Brand Dairy Products Agricultural Research Institute and as an associate professor at Nayoro City University, assumed current position in 2021. Assessing Appropriate Conditions Through Science
The concept of Animal Welfare (AW), which improves the living environment of livestock and other animals, has gained attention in recent years. In Europe, the European Union (EU) has led regulatory efforts, creating an international trend with participation from various countries and private companies. In Japan, the Livestock Technology Association (Tokyo) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries have established guidelines. In 2016, the Animal Welfare Livestock Association (Nakasatsunai Village, Tokachi Region) was founded. We spoke with Associate Professor Yoshiharu Shimizuike (45) of Hokkaido University’s Graduate School of Agriculture, who researches AW and serves as a director of the association, about its history and future prospects.
