A Chinese man has been arrested on suspicion of illegally overstaying in Japan for approximately 24 years and 4 months.

According to police, the 63-year-old unemployed Chinese national with no fixed address was arrested on the spot on the 11th on suspicion of illegally overstaying for about 24 years and 4 months.

Around 1:30 PM on the 11th, a passerby reported to police that “a man riding a bicycle had collapsed” on a street in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture.

The collapsed man had no visible injuries and was able to respond to questions. When police officers who rushed to the scene checked his passport, they discovered his short-term stay visa had expired on May 24, 2001, leading to his immediate arrest.

The man admitted to the allegations and told police during questioning that he “came to Suzuka 2-3 days ago relying on a friend.”
