The Water Resources, Public Works, and Construction Development Agency of South Tangerang City is acting quickly to address serious damage to the Merpati Raya Bridge in Ciputat, after a section of the bridge’s abutment was reported to have collapsed due to erosion from the river current.
This damage is considered potentially dangerous for road users and threatens to cut off the main access route on Merpati Raya Road.
To anticipate these risks, the agency has implemented a temporary closure of the bridge starting Tuesday afternoon for the next three days to carry out emergency repairs.
“We had actually anticipated this damage with previous minor repairs. However, the deterioration of the bridge structure occurred faster than expected. For public safety, we must carry out comprehensive repairs,” said a spokesperson for the agency.
A technical team from the agency has been deployed to the site to dismantle the damaged bridge structure and repair the severely affected abutment section.
The road closure is also supported by coordination across multiple agencies, including the Transportation Department and Police, to manage traffic flow, install barriers, and put up notification banners.
“We apologize for this inconvenience. Public safety is our top priority. We ask for the public’s support and understanding so the repair process can proceed smoothly and be completed on time,” the spokesperson added.
The Merpati Raya Bridge is one of the older bridges that was scheduled for complete reconstruction in 2026.
However, because field conditions deteriorated more quickly, emergency measures had to be accelerated.
The agency ensures that the repair process will be carried out optimally and is committed to completing it as quickly as possible.
