TANGERANG – The Regional Library and Archives Office (DPAD) of Tangerang City reaffirms its commitment to providing inclusive and barrier-free public services. As a concrete manifestation of this effort, DPAD is now expanding the reach of its flagship program “Durian” (Children’s Literacy World) and storytelling to target children with special needs.
On Thursday (05/21), the Tangerang City Regional Library welcomed students from Diandra Special School (SKh) and Mutiara Bangsa Elementary School. This visit became an important moment to introduce literacy facilities to the students more closely.
Public Space Without Barriers
The head of DPAD Tangerang City stated that the regional library is a public space open to everyone regardless of physical or mental background. For them, access to literacy is a fundamental right for every child.
“The meaning of public service is very broad and global. We do not limit anyone. Both regular children and extraordinary children all have the same right to enjoy the literacy facilities we provide,” they said.
Interactive and Disability-Friendly Approach
The Durian program, which has been the library’s main attraction, is specially adapted to create a comfortable atmosphere for children with special needs. The storytelling sessions are packaged with more interactive methods, using media such as puppets and musical instruments, and interspersed with various educational games.
They explained that this method adjustment is made to ensure the essence of the activity is maintained. “Our staff adjust the delivery method to be more interactive. The most important thing is to ensure that the core of the activity stays on the track of education and literacy,” they added.
Beyond just programs, DPAD Tangerang City also continues to strive to meet inclusive physical facility standards. Currently, the library has provided a special room equipped with a collection of Braille books for visually impaired individuals.
This step is expected to foster reading interest from an early age among children, while also contributing to improving overall literacy quality in Tangerang City in the future.
