The Tangerang City government is preparing disaster mitigation measures for fires at the Rawa Kucing Landfill due to an extreme dry season predicted to last longer.

In this effort, the Tangerang City Environmental Agency is collaborating with the Regional Disaster Management Agency to conduct a joint fire management simulation exercise.

This activity is a response to predictions from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency regarding the El Nino phenomenon expected this year.

Weather conditions forecast to be much hotter and drier increase the risk of fire ignition points, especially from methane gas produced by piles of organic waste.

Moreover, the Rawa Kucing Landfill experienced a major fire during the dry season in 2023.

“We learned from the experience of the Rawa Kucing Landfill fire in 2023. With these regular simulations, we want to ensure the readiness of personnel and equipment to control the situation if a fire occurs, so we can minimize its impact,” it was stated.

Meanwhile, it was added that mapping of the area has been carried out and comprehensive coordination steps have been prepared.

This is crucial considering that fires have occurred in several waste collection points in the Tangerang area in recent days.

“Handling will start from the landfill’s internal procedures to full assistance from the disaster management team if needed,” it was said.

It was also hoped that organic waste from households could be processed by the community themselves into compost and other uses.

“It is hoped this will raise public awareness to sort waste, so organic waste can be turned into compost to fertilize plants in their own homes,” it was explained.

This mitigation effort is also expected to maintain environmental security while ensuring the comfort and health of the surrounding community.
