An emotional atmosphere filled the modest home of Ahmad Zaini (45) and his wife Rafika (42) in Tanjung Pura, Langkat Regency, on Wednesday (8/6/2025).
Their humble residence suddenly became the center of attention after a visit from Lieutenant Colonel Medwin Sangkakala, Commander of the 0203 Langkat Military District.
The Indonesian Army officer’s visit was not without reason. The couple’s eldest son, Andika Pranata (19), achieved a remarkable accomplishment by passing the rigorous selection process for the 2025 Military Academy.
The son of a meatball vendor has now officially begun his journey to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a soldier.
Upon arrival at Andika’s home, Lieutenant Colonel Sangkakala was warmly welcomed by Ahmad Zaini and his wife Rafika. The small, simply furnished house radiated warmth as the officer sat cross-legged on the floor mat with the family.
The village head of Pematang Tengah, who was also present, witnessed the heartfelt, family-like conversation.
“We are deeply moved. We never expected our simple home to be visited by a military commander. This is an indescribable pride,” said Rafika with tears in her eyes.
During his visit, Lieutenant Colonel Sangkakala expressed his pride and encouraged the local community.
“Andika’s story is living proof that joining the military requires no fees. All tests are conducted transparently. With proper preparation and meeting the requirements, opportunities are open to everyone, regardless of economic background,” emphasized Sangkakala.
He also hoped Andika’s success would inspire other children in Langkat to dream big and persevere despite coming from modest families.
Andika was born into a humble family. His father, Ahmad Zaini, has sold meatballs for years to support his family.
Initially, he roamed the streets selling grilled meatballs on a motorcycle for five years before finally opening a small stall along the Pematang Tengah roadside in Tanjung Pura.
“Earnings are unpredictable—sometimes slow, sometimes decent. But what matters is it’s enough for daily needs,” said Ahmad with watery eyes. Despite financial struggles, his determination to support his son’s dreams never wavered.
According to Ahmad, Andika had dreamed of becoming a soldier since elementary school. He diligently exercised and maintained his physical health to prepare for the Military Academy’s strict selection process.
His efforts paid off. Andika passed purely on merit—without bribes—relying only on dedication, ability, and his parents’ prayers. He has now officially begun his education as a Cadet Corporal at the Military Academy.
As a father, Ahmad Zaini only hopes his eldest son will succeed in his military education. “May Andika stay healthy, complete his studies, make our family proud, and serve the nation,” he said.
Besides Andika, Ahmad has two other children: Rafa Ubaidillah, a 12th-grade student at MAN 2 Tanjung Pura, and Dinda Fafiza, who is still in elementary school.
Despite their modest life, Ahmad believes education and hard work are the keys to his children’s future.
The visit from the Langkat Military Commander not only brought pride to Ahmad Zaini’s family but also ignited hope among neighbors. Andika’s story proves that economic limitations are no barrier to achieving big dreams.
