Rezeki Gea (18), a student at SMA Negeri 1 Tuhemberua in North Nias Regency, was hospitalized at Tuhemberua Community Health Center after experiencing nausea, dizziness, and vomiting, suspected to be after consuming the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program at their school.
The student’s parent explained that their child and friends were distributed MBG meals at school. After consumption, the child experienced nausea and dizziness leading to vomiting.
The child tried to endure the pain until school dismissal time. Upon arriving home, the child experienced nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
The parent stated the MBG menu consumed at school consisted of rice, eggs, beans, watermelon, and vegetables.
Seeing the child’s condition worsening, the parent took them to Tuhemberua Community Health Center the next morning.
“After examination, our child was hospitalized. According to preliminary information from the Tuhemberua Community Health Center doctor, the child’s illness was due to diarrhea. The doctor recommended waiting 2-3 days for complete recovery,” the parent said.
Regarding the incident, the parent mentioned that MBG program managers had visited them at the health center while explaining that the meals from their kitchen were safe and clean.
The parent hopes the North Nias Regency Government and related parties will provide attention and ensure the food safety of MBG meals given to school children to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
“So that this MBG program truly provides good nutritional benefits,” the parent hoped.
Tuhemberua Community Health Center officials declined to answer regarding patients suspected of MBG food poisoning.
“Good afternoon. We have more than one patient and I don’t remember the specific patient mentioned. We cannot casually provide information about patients’ illnesses without clear basis. Thank you,” they stated.
The Head of Tuhemberua SPPG stated that regarding the incident at SMA Negeri 1 Tuhemberua where students experienced nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and diarrhea symptoms, the MBG meals distributed at that school did not come from the kitchen located in Tuhemberua District.
“From our Tuhemberua kitchen, if there’s information about MBG incidents that we didn’t distribute, we request not to immediately blame us because there are other kitchen parties managing and distributing in the Tuhemberua area,” they added.
After investigation, the kitchen managing MBG meals distributed at SMA Negeri 1 Tuhemberua came from a kitchen in Sawo District.
The Head of Sawo District SPPG confirmed they were aware of the incident.
“We are still waiting for the doctor’s examination results. If the illness originated from the MBG menu distributed by the management party, we are ready to take responsibility,” they said.
