Medan –
The British music group Honne is scheduled to perform in Medan later this month. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of Medan has opposed Honne’s concert, stating that it promotes LGBT values.
“MUI Medan rejects all forms of public activities, including concerts, performances, social campaigns, and digital content, whether directly or indirectly, that carry messages supporting LGBT behavior,” said the Chairman of MUI Medan in a statement.
He clarified that the council does not oppose entertainment or concerts as a form of expression. However, if such activities are suspected of promoting LGBT values, MUI is obligated to reject any events that contradict religious teachings and societal norms.
“This is not about individuals or groups. It’s about safeguarding our public spaces from being used to promote values that harm morality and social order,” he stated.
MUI Medan urged all parties, including local authorities and event organizers, to be more selective in granting permits for public events, especially those involving figures or groups that have expressed support for LGBT on various platforms. This is to prevent the infiltration of values that conflict with religion and social norms.
“We must remain vigilant. Do not allow any space for the infiltration of values that oppose religion and societal norms. Our youth must be protected from the normalization of deviance, in any form,” he emphasized.
MUI also stressed that this rejection is not meant to personally target anyone but is a moral and social responsibility to uphold the values embraced by the wider community.
“We are not in a position to antagonize anyone. However, we have a duty to voice our opposition to things that undermine morality and contradict the principles of our society,” he concluded.
