US and UK launch airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen

Explosions in Yemen

The United States and the United Kingdom have carried out a series of airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, officials confirmed.

The strikes targeted multiple locations used by the Iran-backed group to launch attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

The joint operation involved aircraft and Tomahawk missiles, hitting radar systems, drone capabilities, and missile storage sites.

Officials said the strikes were necessary to protect international trade routes and prevent further escalation.

The Houthi group has not yet commented on the extent of the damage.

Yemen

Yemen is a country in the Arabian Peninsula with a rich history as a center of ancient trade, including the famed Kingdom of Sheba and the incense route. Its cultural heritage includes distinctive architecture like the mud-brick skyscrapers of Shibam and the old city of Sana’a, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In recent decades, Yemen has been marked by political instability and a devastating civil war, which has severely impacted its historic sites and population.

Red Sea

The Red Sea is a narrow, saltwater inlet of the Indian Ocean lying between Africa and Asia, renowned for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Historically, it has served as a crucial trade route since ancient times, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal, which opened in 1869. Its name may derive from the seasonal blooms of red-hued algae or the reddish mountains along its shores.
