The Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta mentioned an unusual condition or anomaly regarding cinemas in Indonesia. He highlighted that the number of cinemas in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta, is still very high, even though abroad they have decreased significantly.

“This is what makes Indonesia an anomaly, everyone. Around the world, there is a decline in the number of moviegoers in cinemas,” said Rano Karno at a film screening event organized by Kulturanesia, commemorating Bung Karno month at Metropole XXI, Jakarta, Sunday (7/6/2026).

Rano then compared the number of cinemas in Jakarta with Hong Kong. He stated that the number of cinemas in Hong Kong is only 25, in contrast to Jakarta, which still has 3,500.

“Yesterday, the Jakarta team went to Hong Kong for market purposes. In Hong Kong, there are only 25 cinemas left, just 25 cinema buildings. Jakarta still has 3,500,” he revealed.

“This is an anomaly. Suddenly, many investors, producers, and filmmakers from around the world are coming to Indonesia, especially to Jakarta, to create something,” he added.

Rano said that the Jakarta Film Commission is being prepared. It will provide subsidies and support to filmmakers through the Jakarta Film Commission.

“For that, of course, as deputy governor, I will support it. Once the Jakarta Film Commission is established, we will provide, what’s it called, a kind of subsidy or facilities so that Indonesian filmmakers can produce again,” he mentioned.

The Chairman of the DPP PDIP also stated that President Soekarno himself viewed art and film not merely as entertainment. Therefore, the film screening was chosen to commemorate Bung Karno month.

“Of course, this is about the relevance of Bung Karno’s thoughts. Bung Karno viewed art and film not just as entertainment,” he said.

Metropole XXI

Metropole XXI is a conceptual architectural and urban planning project in Moscow, Russia, designed to reimagine the historic Metropol Hotel complex. Conceived in the early 2000s, it aimed to blend the hotel’s early 20th-century Art Nouveau heritage with futuristic glass-and-steel additions, though the ambitious plan was never fully realized. The site remains a symbol of the tension between preserving historical identity and embracing modernist innovation in post-Soviet urban development.
