Depok (05/17/2026) — The internet was briefly stirred by a video upload showing a herd of deer blocking motorcyclists in the early morning hours in the border area between Depok and Srengseng Sawah, South Jakarta. This unique phenomenon, which occurred on Tuesday (05/12) around 3:00 AM local time, even sparked jokes from netizens who mentioned the existence of a “fictional Narnia world gate” in Depok City.

However, the mystery of the origin of these four-legged mammals has now finally been revealed. The herd of deer is confirmed not to be wild animals, but privately owned ones that escaped from a breeding area.

Wandering Out Due to an Open Gate

The head of RT 05/RW 02 in Kukusan Village, Beji District, Rahmat, confirmed that these animals came from the Kabeda Fishing area. The location where the deer appeared in the viral video is on the Depok-Srengseng Sawah alternative route, which is a busy 24-hour access road to the Brigif Toll Road.

  • Not Into Residential Areas: Rahmat emphasized that the herd of deer only went out to the area outside the fence that still bordered the Kabeda area, and did not break into yards or densely populated residential areas.

  • Local Residents’ Response: For local residents, the presence of these deer is already a common sight, so they were not surprised when the video suddenly went viral on TikTok and Instagram platforms.

“For the residents here, it’s a normal thing because Kabeda has been raising deer on their vast land for a long time. Maybe at that time the gate was open, so they just wandered out for fun,” explained Rahmat on Sunday (05/17).

Timeline of Six Private Deer Escaping

The management of Kabeda Fishing also provided clarification regarding the incident. Pras, a cleaning staff member at the location, explained that there are six deer kept independently within the fishing and park area.

The early morning incident was purely caused by human error, where the main gate was accidentally left unlocked. The deer only went out to “peek” towards the main road and were immediately herded back into the enclosure shortly after the incident.

Authority Response and BKSDA Coordination Plans

In a circulated Point of View (POV) video clip, a pair of motorcyclists can be seen briefly interacting and trying to guide the confused herd of deer to walk back home, assisted by an online motorcycle taxi driver coming from the opposite direction.

Although the situation on the ground was deemed conducive and the animals have been secured again, this event still attracted the attention of public safety authorities. The Depok City Government, through the Fire and Rescue Department (DPKP), stated that it will take preventive measures regarding the ownership of these animals.

The Head of Operational Control for the Depok City DPKP, Tessy Haryati, emphasized that her party will immediately coordinate across agencies. “This information will be forwarded to the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), considering that the regulations and authority for supervising animals categorized as protected are under their jurisdiction,” concluded Tessy.
