Unique! Depok Military Command Holds Busker Audition to Celebrate 80th Anniversary of Indonesian National Armed Forces 🎶
It’s not just military parades or ceremonial marches, but the strumming of street guitars and melodious voices also marked this year’s 80th TNI Anniversary. Kodim 0508/Depok chose a different approach: organizing a street performer competition audition at their headquarters on Monday (15/9/25) evening.
A total of 14 participants from seven Koramil units in Depok City performed in turns. Each was given the opportunity to perform two songs—one mandatory, one of their choice. The evening atmosphere transformed into something resembling a street music stage, only this time the audience consisted of military personnel and local residents.
The commander stated this event wasn’t just a competition, but also a form of appreciation for street musicians who often entertain people in simple ways.
“Depok has many street art talents. We want to provide space for expression, appreciation, while fostering camaraderie through this TNI Anniversary moment,” he said.
From this audition, the two best performers will be sent to the Kodam Jaya level to compete with finalists from other cities. So, street performers aren’t just singing for people on the streets, but also get the opportunity to showcase their talents on a bigger stage.
More than just a competition, this event serves as the military’s way of strengthening community bonds. Music was chosen as a universal language that can embrace everyone.
“Hopefully this activity can further strengthen unity and togetherness,” the commander concluded.
That evening, Depok proved one thing: behind the camouflage uniforms, there’s space for guitars, smiles, and harmony. 🎤✨
TNI Anniversary
“TNI Anniversary” refers to the annual commemoration of the founding of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia, or TNI). It is celebrated every October 5th, marking its establishment in 1945 during the Indonesian National Revolution to defend the newly proclaimed republic. The day is observed with military parades, ceremonies, and public events to honor the service and history of the armed forces.
Kodim 0508/Depok
Kodim 0508/Depok is a military district command (Kodim) of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI-AD) located in Depok, West Java. As a local military headquarters, its history is tied to the administrative and territorial structure of the Indonesian military, established to maintain security and support governance within its designated region.
Depok City
Depok City is a historic area in West Java, Indonesia, originally established as a private estate in the 17th century by Cornelis Chastelein, a Dutch colonial administrator. It has since evolved from a small agricultural settlement into a major modern satellite city and part of the Jakarta metropolitan area.
Koramil
Koramil refers to the Koramil (Komando Rayon Militer), which are Indonesian military district commands under the Kodim (District Military Command) structure. These local units are part of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and are responsible for maintaining security and supporting community development at the sub-district level. Established as part of Indonesia’s territorial military network, they have historically played a role in both national defense and civic missions.
Kodam Jaya
Kodam Jaya is the military area command of the Indonesian Army responsible for the capital region of Jakarta and its surrounding areas. It was officially established in 1950, following Indonesia’s independence, to maintain security and defense in the nation’s most vital political and economic center.
street performer competition audition
This is not a traditional place or cultural site, but a modern event. Street performer competitions, such as the famous Buskers Festival in cities like Montreal or Christchurch, are auditions where performers showcase talents like music, juggling, or comedy to earn a spot in a larger festival. Their history is tied to the revival of public busking as a celebrated art form in the late 20th century.
community bonds
“Community bonds” refer to the social ties and shared values that unite members of a local group or society, historically strengthened through collective activities, traditions, and mutual support. These connections have evolved from ancient tribal affiliations and village cooperatives into modern neighborhood associations and digital networks. They remain essential for fostering resilience, cultural continuity, and a sense of belonging.
military personnel
“Military personnel” refers to the collective body of individuals serving in a nation’s armed forces, not a specific place or cultural site. This group has existed throughout recorded history, evolving from ancient citizen-soldiers to today’s professional, standing armies. Their role has historically been to defend national sovereignty, maintain security, and, at times, project state power.
