The Depok District Court panel of judges has sentenced Rudy Kurniawan (RK), a member of the Depok City Legislative Council from the PDIP faction, to 10 years in prison and a fine of Rp 300 million, with a substitute of 3 months confinement. The verdict was read on Wednesday (15/10/2025) in a public hearing.

This sentence is lighter than the demand of the Public Prosecutor, who had previously requested a 13-year prison term for RK. The case originated from a report of sexual abuse against a minor who was a junior high school student in Depok.

In the verdict’s considerations, the court stated that RK was proven legally and convincingly guilty of committing a criminal act by coaxing and deceiving the victim into committing immoral acts.

“The defendant, Rudy Kurniawan, has been proven legally and convincingly guilty of committing a criminal act by intentionally using deceit and coaxing a child to have intercourse with him,” the judge stated while reading the verdict.

The judge also outlined several aggravating circumstances in this case. As a public representative, RK should have been a moral example for the community, not committed acts that tarnish the dignity of the legislative institution. Furthermore, the defendant’s actions caused deep trauma to the victim and have the potential to damage the child’s future.

“The defendant’s acts were committed repeatedly against a minor. He was also not honest in providing testimony during the trial,” the judge continued.

Meanwhile, the mitigating circumstances, according to the panel of judges, were the defendant’s polite demeanor during the trial and the fact that he had no prior criminal record.

Responding to the verdict, the defendant’s legal advisor conveyed that his team would still consider further legal steps.

“We are still thinking about it,” he said briefly after the hearing.

Its function is to represent the public interest by investigating crimes and presenting evidence in court against accused individuals.
