For the past several years, millions of Mumbaikars have been traveling by air every year. However, given the city’s importance and the increasing number of people traveling in and out of Mumbai, passenger traffic pressure has started to rise. As an alternative, the Navi Mumbai International Airport route was implemented. Passenger traffic will soon begin from Navi Mumbai Airport.
Terminal 1 is to be demolished as part of a larger project to redevelop the Mumbai airport area. However, the administration has stated that it will not be demolished anytime soon and will be implemented after the Terminal 2 to be built at Navi Mumbai Airport becomes operational.
It has been reported that some areas of Terminal 1 at Mumbai International Airport have already been closed due to security and management planning reasons.
“We have already temporarily closed part of Terminal 1 due to safety reasons for the airport construction,” said the CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Limited.
Meanwhile, the intention behind postponing the complete demolition of Terminal 1 for some more time appears to be to avoid inconvenience to passengers. Mumbai International Airport currently does not have sufficient infrastructure to handle additional passenger traffic.
More than 10 million passengers travel through Terminal 1 (T1) alone every year. The administration estimates that closing Terminal 1 without an alternative system in place to transport these passengers will create additional strain on the rest of the system.

Meanwhile, the demolition of Terminal 1 is part of the Mumbai International Airport (CSMIA) redevelopment project, which will provide additional passenger capacity and state-of-the-art infrastructure at the airport. However, once Terminal 1 is demolished, it could take many years to build a new building there, project managers have estimated.
