Tamil Nadu Election 2026 Issues: Voting is taking place today for the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. In this election, two major alliances, led by DMK and AIADMK, are contesting. Meanwhile, actor-turned-leader Joseph Vijay is trying to make it a triangular contest through his party TVK. Today’s voting will decide who will rule the state for the next five years. The Tamil Nadu Assembly has a total of 234 seats. Whichever alliance secures 118 seats will form the government in the state.
Contest Between These Two Alliances
According to political analysts, the main contest is between the ruling DMK-led alliance and the opposition AIADMK-led NDA alliance. The DMK alliance includes Congress, leftist parties, and other regional parties. Among them, DMK is contesting on around 170 seats, and Congress on about 28 seats. The remaining seats have been distributed among allied parties.
On the other hand, AIADMK is contesting in alliance with BJP, with AIADMK candidates on most seats. In this election, BJP is contesting on 27 seats. Additionally, actor Vijay’s party TVK is contesting on all 234 seats, trying to emerge as a third force.
Key Issues People Will Vote On
Speaking of major election issues, employment, development, inflation, water crisis, and welfare schemes are prominent. Additionally, cash-for-votes and electoral transparency have become significant issues. This is due to the seizure of large amounts of cash and illegal goods. Women’s reservation, social justice, and center-versus-state politics are also part of the electoral debate among political parties.
This election is seen as a kind of referendum on Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s leadership and his government’s performance. Meanwhile, AIADMK is banking on anti-incumbency. It hopes to receive strong support from people dissatisfied with DMK. However, it is still difficult to say who will receive the people’s blessing.
Who Will Win and Who Will Lose?
For now, it can be said that today’s election is going to be quite interesting. It has become a contest between traditional Dravidian politics and the challenge of new political forces. It remains to be seen which party emerges victorious in this battle and which one faces defeat.
