PM Modi Set to Create Unique Record in a Week, Pandit Nehru Will Be Left Behind

Narendra Modi and Jawaharlal Nehru: On June 10, 2026, Prime Minister Modi is set to create a unique record as the longest-serving democratically elected Prime Minister. This will break the record of all democratically elected Prime Ministers. So far, the record for the longest tenure as Prime Minister belongs to the country’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. By serving as Prime Minister for 4,399 days on June 10, PM Modi will break that record.

When the country gained independence, Pandit Nehru took over as Prime Minister in 1947, but the first elections in independent India were held in 1952. After that, on May 13, 1952, Pandit Nehru became the head of the first democratically elected government. He remained Prime Minister until his death on May 27, 1964. Thus, he served as Prime Minister for a total of 4,398 days. By serving as Prime Minister for 4,399 days on June 10, Modi will break that record.

Indira Gandhi

This is considered another milestone in PM Modi’s political career. Last year, on July 25, he broke the record of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Gandhi served as Prime Minister continuously from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977 — a period of 4,077 days.

Pandit Nehru and PM Modi

From Pandit Nehru’s era to PM Modi’s era, India has seen major changes. When Pandit Nehru took charge, India’s population was about 34 crore. By the time PM Modi came to power in 2014, the population had crossed the 131 crore mark. In 2026, the population has increased to over 146 crore. Nehru led a political landscape dominated by the Congress party. In the 1952 elections, the party won 364 out of 489 Lok Sabha seats. In contrast, PM Modi has governed in a much more fragmented and competitive political environment.

Additionally, PM Modi is the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two consecutive full majority terms. He is also the first Prime Minister since Nehru to win three consecutive Lok Sabha elections as the incumbent leader.

This new record adds another achievement to PM Modi’s growing list of records for long tenures in public office. Earlier this year, he became India’s longest-serving elected head of government, when his total tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and Prime Minister crossed 8,930 days.

On June 10, when he crosses the 4,399-day mark, Modi will formally become the longest-serving democratically elected Prime Minister in India’s history. Thus, he will break a record that had stood for more than six decades.
