Imphal, Security forces in Manipur’s Imphal West and East districts have arrested two arms smugglers and two militants linked to banned organizations. Police provided this information on Wednesday.

A senior official stated that a 41-year-old active militant from the banned organization ‘Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup’ was apprehended from his residence in Fumlou Keiroi Maning, Imphal West district, on Tuesday. The official mentioned that the militant was involved in recruiting members for the banned group. Additionally, a 33-year-old member of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (MFL) was arrested on Tuesday from a rented house in Lamphal, Imphal West district, on charges of involvement in extortion activities. Security forces also detained two individuals on Monday from different locations in Imphal East district for alleged involvement in arms smuggling and sales. A 9mm pistol and ammunition were seized from the suspects.

Security forces have been conducting search operations in Manipur since ethnic violence erupted two years ago. Ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023 have resulted in over 260 deaths and left thousands homeless. The central government imposed President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The term of the Manipur Legislative Assembly lasts until 2027, but it is currently suspended.

On Tuesday, Parliament approved a statutory resolution extending President’s Rule in Manipur for an additional six months. The President’s Rule, imposed under Article 356 of the Constitution on February 13, 2025, has now been extended until August 13.
