Information was announced by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) on the afternoon of June 3.

With the recurrence of a foot injury, it is officially farewell to the Vietnam national team. This is unfortunate for Phuong because he had just returned to the team after more than a year of absence and was competing with effort in the national first division tournament in the colors of Truong Tuoi Binh Phuoc.

Over the past 5 days of the team’s gathering, Phuong only trained for 2 sessions on the field. He participated in the first training session on May 30, then felt pain and had to miss the sessions on May 31 and June 1, and when returning to the field on June 2, the injury recurred.

Without Cong Phuong, head coach Kim Sang Sik decided to call up young forward Nguyen Quoc Viet as a replacement. Quoc Viet is currently training with the U22 Vietnam team and is considered a suitable replacement due to his progress and relatively stable form recently.

Quoc Viet, born in 2003, is one of the promising young forwards of Vietnam’s football. He has participated in all youth team levels from U19, U20 to U23 and the Vietnam Olympic team in regional and continental tournaments over the past 3 years.

At the club level, Viet has also had experience competing in the V-League and has scored goals. Quoc Viet himself had previously been called up by coach Kim to the Vietnam national team, so he is not unfamiliar with the team environment.

Right in this afternoon’s training session (June 3), Quoc Viet will join the training with the Vietnam national team.

On June 4, coach Kim Sang Sik will have the team play an internal match with the U22 Vietnam team to test new faces before preparing for the trip to Malaysia to play the 2027 Asian Cup third qualifying round with the host team.

The match between Vietnam and Malaysia in the Asian Cup qualifying round will take place on June 10. On June 6, coach Kim Sang Sik and his team will head to Malaysia.
