Indonesian and Dutch Ministers of Culture Agree to Strengthen Cooperation on the Repatriation of Indonesian Cultural Artifacts

The Hague – The Indonesian Minister of Culture and the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture, and Science agreed to strengthen cooperation on the repatriation of Indonesian cultural objects from the Netherlands.

The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting at the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science in The Hague on June 14, 2025.

Both ministers emphasized the importance of long-term collaboration in origin research of collections, strengthening institutional cooperation, and simplifying the process of returning culturally and historically significant items originally from Indonesia.

The meeting also was a key part of strengthening the Indonesia–Netherlands Comprehensive Partnership and the Plan of Action for 2024–2025, which places culture as one of the main pillars of cooperation between the two countries.

Both ministers affirmed their mutual commitment to continue the process of repatriating Indonesian cultural objects, including through the extension of the Technical Arrangement on Repatriation to be signed in July 2025.
