June 13 is Cultural and Natural Heritage Day. Yesterday (the 3rd), the National Cultural Heritage Administration held a press conference to announce the theme for the 2026 Cultural and Natural Heritage Day: “Cultural Relics Belong to the People, Serve the People.” The host city, Wuhan in Hubei Province, will hold an opening ceremony, thematic forums, thematic exhibitions, and other activities, and will release a list of high-quality development cases in the cultural heritage field. At the same time, cultural heritage departments and institutions across the country will organize over 7,000 online and offline activities, including more than 3,400 cultural relic public service offerings.
Cultural and Natural Heritage Day
Cultural and Natural Heritage Day, also known as China’s Cultural Heritage Day, is observed on the second Saturday of June each year. It was established in 2005 to raise public awareness and appreciation for China’s rich cultural and natural heritage. The day features various events across the country, including museum exhibitions, heritage site visits, and educational activities to promote preservation efforts.
Wuhan
Wuhan is a major city in central China, known as the capital of Hubei Province and a key transportation hub along the Yangtze River. Historically, it was formed by the merger of three towns—Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang—and played a significant role in the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, which ended imperial rule in China. Today, it is celebrated for its cultural heritage, including the iconic Yellow Crane Tower, and its modern significance as a center of industry, education, and innovation.
Hubei Province
Hubei Province, located in central China, is historically significant as the heart of the ancient Chu civilization and a key region along the Yangtze River. Its capital, Wuhan, played a pivotal role in modern Chinese history, notably as the site of the 1911 Wuchang Uprising that led to the end of imperial rule. Today, Hubei is known for its cultural heritage, including the Three Gorges region and the Yellow Crane Tower, as well as its economic importance in transportation and industry.
