On December 22, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Kast on his election as President of the Republic of Chile.

Xi Jinping noted that Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with New China. The two countries have always adhered to mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit, offering mutual understanding and support on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns. Substantial results have been achieved in practical cooperation across various fields, bringing tangible benefits to the peoples of both nations. China-Chile relations have long been at the forefront of China’s relations with Latin American countries, and there is a broad consensus across all sectors of both societies to continuously advance the development of bilateral ties. I attach great importance to the development of China-Chile relations and am willing to work together with President-elect Kast to carry forward the traditional friendship, continuously elevate the China-Chile comprehensive strategic partnership to new heights, and better benefit the peoples of both countries.

China-Chile comprehensive strategic partnership

The China-Chile comprehensive strategic partnership, established in 2012 and elevated in 2016, is a diplomatic framework marking a high level of political and economic cooperation between the two nations. It builds upon a long history, as Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1970. This partnership has facilitated major trade agreements, making China Chile’s top trading partner, with a focus on sectors like mining, agriculture, and infrastructure.
