On June 6, the joint initiative to promote physical and mental health among students in Fengtai District was officially launched, simultaneously advancing the “Bright Eyes and White Teeth” improvement campaign for primary and secondary school students. On the same day, the district’s first children’s health science museum opened at Beijing Jiahe Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
At the launch ceremony, the district released the “Plan for Collaborative Promotion of Student Physical and Mental Health,” defining the principles of “health first, collaborative governance, and precise intervention,” focusing on five key areas: healthy weight, vision health, mental health, bone health, and oral health. The district’s education commission, health commission, and sports bureau established coordination mechanisms such as joint meetings, information sharing, and joint supervision, forming a work framework with district-level coordination, school implementation, and collaboration among families, schools, communities, and medical institutions.
The newly opened children’s health science museum features bright colors and strong interactivity. It includes five functional modules: a vision protection experience area, an oral health interactive area, a bone development assessment area, a mental health healing area, and a nutrition and weight management area. Unlike traditional display-based science education, the museum uses engaging formats such as motion-sensing games, model operations, and fun quizzes that children enjoy. In the vision protection area, several elementary school students played motion-sensing games on a large screen, following instructions to look out the window, naturally remembering the “20-20-20” eye care rule. In the oral health interactive area, children used oversized toothbrush models to “brush” cartoon teeth, with an electronic screen showing real-time cleanliness. A parent, Ms. Li, remarked: “Before, when I told my child not to slouch or be picky about food, they wouldn’t listen. Today, after playing for half an hour, they voluntarily said they would brush their teeth correctly every day and take care of their teeth.”
A representative from the Fengtai District Education Commission stated that building the children’s health science museum extends health education from the classroom to society, shifting from preaching to experiential learning. “We hope every child can ‘learn through play and do through learning’ here, becoming the first person responsible for their own health.” In the future, the museum will be regularly open to all primary and secondary schools in the district, complementing annual health screenings to create personalized health records for each child.
To advance health services from “treating illness” to “preventing illness,” the Fengtai District Maternal and Child Health Hospital and Beijing Jiahe Women’s and Children’s Hospital were awarded the “Fengtai District Student Health Science Base” plaque. The Beijing Hu Yamei Children’s Medical Research Institute also granted the “June 1st Health Express Project Base” to Jiahe Women’s and Children’s Hospital. A hospital representative said they would rely on a multidisciplinary team to regularly conduct health lectures, parent classes, and mini-doctor experience camps, serving as a “health booster station” for children.
During the ceremony, four representatives from schools, families, social organizations, and student groups jointly issued the “Physical and Mental Health Guardian Initiative.” Schools pledged to ensure students have two hours of physical activity daily, parents committed to controlling their children’s electronic device usage time, and student representatives vowed to be the first person responsible for their own health.

The student health literacy showcase was equally impressive. Performances included cheerleading from Fengtai District Jingfeng Primary School, creative jump rope from Xiluoyuan No. 5 Primary School, and martial arts from the High School Affiliated to Peking University Fengtai School, demonstrating the vibrant energy of Fengtai students with “sweat on their bodies and light in their eyes.”
A representative from the Fengtai District Education Commission noted that the establishment of the student physical and mental health community marks the starting point for systematically promoting youth health in the district. The next steps will focus on the five key areas of myopia, obesity, scoliosis, mental health, and oral health, conducting comprehensive vision and scoliosis screenings each semester, and issuing “exercise prescriptions” and “nutrition prescriptions” for overweight and obese students, embedding health literacy cultivation throughout the entire growth cycle of students.
