On August 23, the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives issued a notice reminding Chinese tourists traveling to the Maldives to strengthen water safety precautions. The full text is as follows:
Recently, there have been unfortunate cases of Chinese tourists drowning in the Maldives, which is deeply saddening. The Embassy solemnly reminds Chinese tourists traveling to the Maldives to cherish life and prioritize safety. Respect the natural and unique aquatic environment of a foreign country, always put personal safety first, and choose water activities suitable for your physical condition and age.
Always maintain caution. The Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean, where sea conditions often include strong winds, powerful currents, and hidden undertows that may not be easily noticeable. For tourists unfamiliar with the sea or lacking experience, the risk is higher. Visitors must consult with hotel or accommodation staff to identify safe swimming areas and avoid accidentally entering strong currents. Swimming in the ocean carries significantly higher risks compared to pool swimming. It is advisable to exercise caution, wear floatation devices or life jackets, and avoid swimming or playing in the water outside designated safe zones.
Always pay close attention to weather changes. Plan travel and sea activity schedules wisely. Currently, the weather is unpredictable and sea conditions are unstable. Do not venture out to sea or participate in water activities during adverse weather conditions such as strong winds, high waves, or poor visibility.
Always take good care of your family and travel companions. Not all areas of Maldivian resorts and accommodations are staffed with lifeguards, and their availability may vary. For elderly individuals, children, and those who are not strong swimmers, always accompany and look after them to prevent accidents.
Always safeguard travel documents and valuables. Keep cash and other valuable items on your person or stored securely. Ensure luggage is locked to avoid loss and inconvenience. Follow the “Four Do’s” and “Four Don’ts”:
[“Four Do’s”] 1. Always wear a life jacket; 2. Always travel with companions; 3. Always be proficient in using snorkeling equipment; 4. Always participate under the guidance of a licensed professional instructor.
[“Four Don’ts”] 1. Do not go out to sea in severe windy or rainy conditions; 2. Do not go out to sea if the boat lacks proper safety equipment or the crew is unqualified; 3. Individuals with chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or asthma should avoid water activities; 4. Do not enter the water after consuming alcohol.
Additionally, the Embassy sincerely recommends that tourists thoroughly understand and purchase medical and accident insurance that covers water activities before traveling, as it may serve as crucial protection for your rights in emergencies.
The Embassy sincerely hopes that every tourist will enhance safety awareness, improve risk prevention capabilities, enjoy their travels, and return safely.
