India Has a Major Opportunity: Ashwini Vaishnaw

According to the Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, the world will face a shortage of 1 million semiconductor professionals by 2030, and India has a major opportunity to fill this gap.

Highlighting the importance of developing a strong talent base, the Union Minister said that a key objective of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is to build a global pipeline of skilled professionals.

Speaking at the inauguration of CG Power’s first end-to-end semiconductor OSAT pilot line facility in Sanand, Gujarat, the Union Minister stated that the launch of this pilot line is a decisive step toward realizing India’s dream of developing semiconductor design, manufacturing, and downstream capabilities, with Gujarat emerging as a crucial hub in this transformation.

The Union Minister emphasized the critical role of the OSAT pilot line, noting that the chips manufactured here will be used for customer qualification. Once these chips are approved, it will be much easier to begin full-scale production of qualified products for the commercial plant.

He stressed that this inauguration is one of the most significant achievements under the India Semiconductor Mission, under which 10 projects have been approved so far.

The government has partnered with 270 universities and equipped them with state-of-the-art semiconductor design tools. In 2025, these tools were used over 12 million times. As a direct result, 20 chips designed by 17 institutions have been successfully manufactured at the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali.

The Union Minister noted that very few countries in the world provide students with access to such advanced tools. He further stated that this initiative will empower India’s youth, strengthen the technical ecosystem, and establish the country as a global hub for semiconductor talent.

The CG Semi facility in Sanand provides a complete solution for chip assembly, packaging, testing, and post-test services, including traditional and advanced packaging technologies.

This is a major step toward strengthening India’s semiconductor capabilities and supporting the nation’s goal of becoming self-reliant while serving global markets.

India Semiconductor Mission

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is a specialized and independent business division established by the Indian government in 2021 under its Digital India Corporation. Its primary objective is to build a vibrant semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem within India, aiming to position the country as a global hub for electronics manufacturing. This initiative is a key part of the larger ₹76,000 crore incentive scheme to attract major investments and reduce dependency on semiconductor imports.
