Hyderabad, Coal stock at Singareni Collieries Company Limited, which has played a significant role in the country’s mining sector for the past one hundred and thirty-seven years, has dropped to its lowest level. Currently, the company has only 2.651 million tons of coal available across its various mines and coal handling plants, the lowest in the past decade. According to a press release issued here today, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has reported a coal stock of 2.651 million tons at its various mining sites and coal handling plants for the current year.

It was stated that this figure is the lowest coal stock level recorded in the past decade. The company has clarified that coal from these reserves is being continuously supplied to consumers via rail and road transport according to their demand, smoothly. Typically, coal stock is built up during the high-production months, i.e., between November and May.

This accumulated stock is later used to meet the needs of thermal power stations and other consumers when production is expected to be affected due to various factors. Maintaining sufficient coal stock is considered extremely important, especially during the monsoon season, as a shortage could jeopardize the continuous coal supply to thermal power stations.

SCCL’s Minimum Coal Stock and Emphasis on Bidding Process

According to the company, SCCL had a stock of 7.0 million tons in 2015-16 and 7.4 million tons in 2016-17. The average coal stock between 2014 and 2024 was 5 million tons. With the aim of ensuring reliable electricity generation in the country, SCCL aims to maintain a minimum stock of about 3 million tons. This figure is equivalent to the requirement of thermal power stations for approximately fifteen days. This buffer stock facilitates uninterrupted coal delivery even during adverse weather conditions.

The company emphasized that such stock management practices are common across the entire coal industry in the country. SCCL has clarified the requirement for bidders to obtain a site visit certificate. The main objective is to ensure that potential bidders get a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the actual site conditions, safety regulations, scope of work, and any local operational challenges.

This measure is designed to guide contractors in submitting bids that correctly reflect all relevant conditions and associated risks. SCCL stated that the aim is not to limit competition, but to promote fair competition through thorough planning and well-considered decisions, while ensuring efficient execution of projects.
