Dairi. The Dairi community alliance, along with several organizations and environmental advocacy networks, will hold a solidarity action and protest on Thursday (June 4, 2026), coinciding with the commemoration of World Environment Day.

The action is aimed at protesting the issuance of a new environmental permit for PT Dairi Prima Mineral (DPM), which is considered to contradict court rulings and the aspirations of the local community.

The legal representative for Dairi residents stated that this action is a form of rejection of a policy deemed to ignore the ongoing legal process related to the mining project.

“PT DPM’s new environmental permit was issued on March 13, 2026. However, the public only learned of this information on May 5, 2026, during the socialization of the addendum to the Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) of PT DPM at Hotel Beristra, Sidikalang,” he told media on Wednesday (June 3, 2026).

According to him, the community views the issuance of the new permit as an action not aligned with the court ruling that previously granted the Dairi residents’ lawsuit regarding the PT DPM mining project.

“The community considers this new permit issuance a form of defiance against the law and a unilateral action that disregards the court ruling,” he said.

Besides being seen as ignoring the ruling of the highest judicial body, the permit issuance is also considered contrary to the principles of legal certainty and spatial planning regulations in effect in Dairi Regency.

The civil society coalition also highlighted the geographical conditions of the PT DPM concession area, which is assessed as having a high level of vulnerability to natural disasters. They fear that mining activities in the area could increase risks to community safety and environmental sustainability.

“Forcing mining activities in a disaster-prone area is the same as opening the door to extreme disasters that could threaten the safety of residents, the sustainability of living space, and the preservation of ecosystems,” the legal representative emphasized.

The solidarity action will be centered at two locations: the Dairi Regency Regional House of Representatives Office and the Dairi Regent’s Office. The demonstrators are scheduled to deliver speeches, community demands, and various forms of solidarity to encourage environmental protection and community safety.

Through this action, residents hope the government will review the environmental permit that has been issued and prioritize aspects of community safety and environmental preservation in every development policy in Dairi Regency.
