DEPOK (05/06/2026) – To preserve the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems and river flow, PT Tirta Asasta Depok (TAD), in synergy with the Depok City Government and the Ciliwung Friends Foundation, carried out a concrete environmental conservation action along the banks of the Ciliwung River. The event, held in conjunction with the 2026 World Environment Day commemoration, included the release of local fish fry and the planting of shade trees. Under the draft theme Inspiration from Nature, for Climate and a Shared Future, this collective movement reflects a shared commitment to restoring the balance of the river ecosystem while educating and fostering public awareness of the ecological living space around them.

The President Director of PT Tirta Asasta Depok, M. Olik Abdul Holik, emphasized that the Ciliwung River plays a vital role in the survival of Depok residents as it is one of the main sources of raw water for supplying urban clean water needs. Through consistent maintenance efforts, preserving the river ecosystem is projected to have a positive linear impact on the quality of water that is later processed and distributed to customers. To support the sustainability of aquatic habitats, management released several types of local fish, such as snakehead, catfish, and tawes, into the river flow, integrated with the planting of tree seedlings along the riverbanks as a structural greening measure to prevent erosion and maintain the quality of the watershed.

High appreciation for this cross-sector collaboration was also expressed by the Chairman of the Ciliwung Friends Foundation, Hidayat Al Ramdhani. He underscored that active synergy between corporations, government authorities, and environmental communities is key to maintaining nature’s sustainability and stimulating broader public awareness. This environmental restoration movement in the Ciliwung area is expected not only to remain an annual ceremonial event but also to serve as a catalyst for all elements of society to continuously and consistently move together in preserving and restoring the natural function of the river for the benefit of future generations.

Ciliwung River

The Ciliwung River is a major river that flows through Jakarta, Indonesia, and has historically been crucial for trade, transportation, and irrigation since the era of the Tarumanagara Kingdom (4th–7th centuries). During the Dutch colonial period, it was developed into a key waterway for commerce but has since become heavily polluted and prone to severe flooding due to rapid urbanization and deforestation. Today, it symbolizes both Jakarta’s cultural heritage and its ongoing environmental challenges.

Depok
