Two professors from HKBP Nommensen University (UHN) Medan were inaugurated. They are Prof. Dr. Ir. Hotman Manurung, M.S. in the field of Industrial Processing and Chemical Product Technology at the Faculty of Agriculture, and Prof. Dr. Dra. Erika Sinambela, M.Hum. in the field of Teaching Translation at the Faculty of Languages and Arts.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the UHN Medan Faculty of Medicine Auditorium on Friday (8/8/2025). These two professors are the 18th and 19th to be appointed at UHN Medan.

In his scientific oration, Prof. Hotman presented a lecture titled “Palm Oil Mill Waste as a Source of Oil and Sustainable Natural Carotenoids and Food Colorants.”

Hotman explained that proper waste management could yield new benefits, such as increased efficiency in the palm oil processing industry, minimized industrial waste that could harm the environment, and the extraction of essential elements from waste for use in the food industry.

Meanwhile, Prof. Erika Sinambela delivered a lecture titled “Teaching Translation in the AI Era: Threat or Alliance?”

In her oration, Prof. Erika discussed the challenges educators face in competing with technology that has access to vast data resources.

“AI technology can be a partner by maintaining a balance between technology and humanistic values,” said Prof. Erika.

UHN Medan Rector Dr. Richard A.M. Napitupulu, S.T., M.T. expressed pride in the achievements of both professors.

“This inauguration is not only an appreciation of their dedication to higher education but also a motivation for the entire academic community to continue innovating,” said Rector Richard.

Rector Richard explained that since the 2023-2025 period, HKBP Nommensen University has inaugurated seven professors. Soon, another permanent lecturer from HKBP Nommensen University Medan will also achieve professorship.

“The title of professor signifies recognition of academic competence. The more professors we have at HKBP Nommensen University, the more experts we possess. This will undoubtedly enhance the university’s quality as one of the oldest in North Sumatra,” said Rector Richard.

The rector encouraged the professors to excel in their service at HKBP Nommensen University.

According to Rector Richard, Prof. Hotman and Prof. Erika are academics with long-standing careers in their fields, backed by extensive research, scientific publications, and community service.

“This inauguration is a significant milestone for HKBP Nommensen University Medan in strengthening its academic position and reaffirming its commitment to supporting knowledge development that directly impacts society,” concluded Rector Richard.
