After the change of power in the state, Trinamool councilors are resigning from municipalities one after another. This time, a total of 8 councilors of Bhadreshwar Municipality submitted their resignation letters to the Executive Officer on Thursday. Among them is the Chairman of Bhadreshwar Municipality, Prolay Chakraborty. He is known to be close to former Trinamool MLA Indranil Sen. This event has created widespread unrest in Bhadreshwar Municipality.
After Trinamool’s massive defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections and the loss of heavyweight minister and Chandannagar MLA Indranil Sen, the political equation changed. Following the pattern of other municipalities and corporations in the state, the Chairman and 8 councilors of Bhadreshwar Municipality have now resigned. On Thursday, a total of 8 Trinamool councilors, including Municipal Chief Prolay Chakraborty, submitted their resignation letters to the Executive Officer. It is learned that the resignation is due to difficulties in running the board following the party’s defeat in the assembly elections. According to Trinamool sources, even after the resignation of 8 Trinamool councilors from Bhadreshwar Municipality, there will be no difficulty in running the municipal board. The board will function under the leadership of Vice Chairman Firoz Khan.
This is the first instance of councilor resignations in any municipality in Hooghly district after the assembly election debacle. Bhadreshwar Municipality, which falls under the Chandannagar assembly constituency, has 22 wards. In the 2026 elections, Indranil Sen was defeated in Chandannagar by 13,000 votes. He also lagged behind in the Bhadreshwar municipal area. Taking moral responsibility for this party debacle, Trinamool Chairman of Bhadreshwar Municipality, Prolay Chakraborty, resigned.
After submitting the resignation letter, Municipal Chief Prolay Chakraborty said, “Neither BJP nor Trinamool asked me to leave the post. The new government has come to power with the people’s mandate. Let them work for the people. I voluntarily submitted my resignation letter to the Executive Officer.” Regarding this, BJP MLA from Chandannagar, Dipanjan Guha, said, “People are not getting civic services. This has created anger among the people. That is why, out of fear of public wrath, their ‘conscience has awakened’.”
Yesterday, Indranil Sen had stated that although he remains in politics, he is not a politician. He also made it clear that he will no longer be involved in electoral politics. He will not contest any election again. Many things about electoral politics have become clear to him. Following this, today his close Municipal Chief and 8 councilors resigned.
