Canberra, Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Thursday expressed hope to host Prime Minister Narendra Modi again and described India’s growing economic importance as an ‘extraordinary opportunity’ for the Indo-Pacific region. Albanese, addressing parliament in Canberra, said that India, the world’s most populous country, is set to become the third-largest economy this decade.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for our region. We are part of the Pacific Ocean as well as the Indian Ocean.” The Prime Minister said that the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed in 2022 has strengthened trade ties between the two countries (India and Australia), and the two nations have come closer through culture, education, and cricket.

Albanese recalled that he first visited India in 1991 as a ‘backpacker’ and has since visited India twice as Prime Minister. He said the best way to understand India is to travel by bus or train.

The Prime Minister said, “To witness the warmth of India firsthand is a wonderful experience. Now, similarly, I will soon have the honor of hosting Prime Minister Modi, an honor I am eager to repeat for the second time.” He said the visit would be “extraordinary” as a community of over one million people of Indian origin will host it.

The fastest-growing immigrant community in Australia is from India. Modi last visited Australia in May 2023. Albanese said the Indian community in Australia has strengthened the country’s economy and benefited countless small businesses. He said, “Because of you (the Indian community), our country is better. My government will always stand with you and your interests. We will reject any attempt at division.”

The video of Albanese’s address in parliament was shared on social media by Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, who said that his Prime Minister’s warm relations with India have made his work ‘extremely meaningful’. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Modi met with Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong and discussed further strengthening the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Wong came to India to attend the meeting of foreign ministers of the ‘Quad’ countries. During her visit, she also participated in the 17th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue in New Delhi with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
