Addis Ababa, May 27, 2026 — The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that the ongoing agricultural transformation in the East Borena region is a strong testament to Ethiopia’s march toward achieving food self-sufficiency.
In a social media post, the Prime Minister, who is currently visiting agricultural development projects in the region, said that local farmers have cultivated more than 176,223 hectares of land during this agricultural season.
He added that, following these extensive agricultural efforts, the region expects to achieve a massive production exceeding 3.1 million quintals of crops.
Abiy Ahmed wrote: “The ongoing agricultural transformation in the East Borena region is a powerful testament to Ethiopia’s journey toward food self-sufficiency.”
He added: “In this season alone, our hardworking farmers have cultivated more than 176,223 hectares of land, with expectations of a huge production exceeding 3.1 million quintals of crops.”
The Prime Minister noted that the initiative has successfully mobilized over 101,000 families through organized collective farming methods, with the use of modern tractors to convert agricultural potential into high productivity.
According to Abiy Ahmed, the ongoing large-scale wheat harvests in the Liben area, along with teff, maize, and bean crops, are successfully contributing to securing the country’s local food supplies.
