Addis Ababa, May 18, 2026 The Director General of the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute, Fetene Teshome, urged relevant authorities in the region to prioritize providing practical climate information supported by strong cross-border cooperation.
He made these remarks during the opening of the 73rd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 73), held in Addis Ababa and organized by the Climate Prediction and Applications Centre of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in collaboration with member states and development partners.
Fetene further emphasized the need to continue investing in a system that produces knowledge-based climate information at the national and regional levels.
The Director General views these investments as critical for providing scientific guidance to policymakers and ensuring the timely dissemination of climate information, especially to communities most vulnerable and affected by climate change-related risks.
In his closing remarks, he urged countries and international partners to continue strengthening their support, commending the ongoing cooperation and support from key partners, including the World Meteorological Organization and other regional and international institutions.
The 73rd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 73) was held under the theme “Climate Services for Resilience and Sustainable Development.”
