MANILA, Philippines — Former House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez is ready to testify against online personality Franco Mabanta and four others if required by the court, according to his lawyer Elaine Atienza.
“If his presence or participation in the case is required, whether by the court or under the rules, he will comply,” Atienza said on Thursday, May 21.
His lawyer also emphasized that the court, not social media, is the proper venue to hear the case.
“Ultimately, it is the court that will decide,” she added.
Mabanta — founder of Peanut Gallery Media Network — and four others are facing a case of robbery by extortion.
The National Bureau of Investigation arrested the suspects on May 5 after they allegedly attempted to extort P300 million from Romualdez in exchange for not releasing a video supposedly implicating him in a flood control scandal.
