Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung has confirmed that safety remains the top priority in the LRT Jakarta Phase 1B Velodrome-Manggarai construction project.

“Safety for the LRT and MRT is the top priority,”

This was stated by Pramono in response to public concerns regarding the safety of this project, given that full operations are targeted for August 2026. He also explained that this operational target had been set from the beginning of the project.

“Safety for the LRT and MRT is the top priority. Even though it’s being fast-tracked, it’s not actually being rushed because it must be completed and fully operational by August. And that was already set,” said Pramono at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday (May 13).

The LRT Velodrome-Manggarai route is currently in the commissioning or trial phase. This stage is important to ensure safety before the route’s LRT service begins full operations.

“That’s why commissioning has started now. Commissioning is a trial run. During the trial, they determine the number of trainsets and the headway—that’s what is being done now,” he explained.

Through this trial phase, Pramono hopes the LRT service can operate fully according to the set target.

“My hope is that by August, once it is inaugurated, it will operate fully,” Pramono affirmed.

LRT Jakarta Phase 1B Velodrome-Manggarai

LRT Jakarta Phase 1B (Velodrome–Manggarai) is an extension of Jakarta’s light rail transit system, designed to improve connectivity in the Indonesian capital. Construction began in the late 2010s, with the line linking the Velodrome area to the Manggarai transportation hub, a key interchange for commuter trains and other modes of transit. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion and provide a faster, more efficient public transport option for Jakarta’s growing population.

Velodrome

A velodrome is a specialized arena for track cycling, featuring a steeply banked oval track. The first modern velodromes were built in the late 19th century, with the sport gaining popularity in Europe, particularly in France and the United Kingdom. Today, they are used for competitive racing, such as in the Olympic Games, and often serve as community sports venues.

Manggarai is a bustling district in South Jakarta, Indonesia, best known for its major railway station, Stasiun Manggarai, which serves as a crucial transportation hub connecting various parts of the city and surrounding regions. Historically, the area developed around the station, which was built during the Dutch colonial era in the early 20th century, and it has since grown into a dense, vibrant neighborhood with a mix of residential and commercial activity. Today, Manggarai is also recognized for its local markets and as a gateway for commuters traveling to and from Jakarta.

This phase was developed to improve connectivity between East Jakarta and central transit hubs, with construction beginning in the late 2010s and operations gradually launching by 2023. The line is part of a broader effort to alleviate traffic congestion in Jakarta by providing a modern, elevated rail alternative.

Today, these venues continue to host competitive cycling events, including the Olympic Games and world championships.

Manggarai

Manggarai is a district in South Jakarta, Indonesia, best known for its historic and bustling Manggarai Railway Station, one of the busiest stations in the city. The area’s name originates from the Manggarai ethnic group from Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, who were brought to Batavia (now Jakarta) by the Dutch colonial government in the 19th century to serve as laborers. Today, Manggarai remains a key transportation hub, connecting commuters to various parts of Jakarta and its suburbs.

Batavia

Batavia was the colonial name for present-day Jakarta, Indonesia, established by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the early 17th century as their administrative and trading hub in Asia. The city was built on the ruins of the earlier port of Jayakarta and became a center of spice trade, marked by its iconic canals, fortresses, and colonial architecture. Its history reflects a period of Dutch colonial rule, economic exploitation, and cultural fusion, lasting until the name was changed to Jakarta following Indonesian independence.
