Benghazi – The Fuel and Petroleum Crisis Follow-up Committee of the House of Representatives issued an official statement revealing the technical reasons behind the congestion witnessed at fuel stations in some areas of Libya, confirming that the crisis is not fabricated and that urgent steps are being taken to address it and ensure the stability of supplies.

The statement clarified that the role of the Brega Oil Marketing Company is limited to the local marketing of petroleum products, while supplies are sourced from international refineries through the General Department of International Marketing at the National Oil Corporation. It added that a review of shipments for 2025 and the beginning of 2026 revealed that the bottlenecks were not due to operational problems, but rather to a reduction in the number of sea-supplied tankers, which were reduced to 12–13 shipments during August, September, and December 2025, leading to a decrease in reserve stock and the absence of a safe operational margin.

The statement noted that any delay in the arrival of tankers or the impact on seaports, especially in winter conditions, had a direct effect on the regularity of daily distribution. It confirmed that the committee continues its work to ensure the addition of at least two extra tankers during February and March to restore stock levels and operate the distribution system with sufficient flexibility to handle any potential fluctuations or malfunctions.

The committee emphasized in its statement that stabilizing the petroleum products system requires responsible planning based on estimating consumption rates and building a permanent reserve stock.

It also indicated that all measures are being taken transparently and responsibly to ensure the regularity of supplies, protect citizens’ rights, and safeguard state resources.
