Malabo News: According to the official website of the Government of Equatorial Guinea, President Obiang announced on the 2nd that Ciudad de la Paz (City of Peace) in the country’s mainland region is the new capital of Equatorial Guinea, and signed the relevant decree and declaration.
The related ceremony was held in Ciudad de la Paz, the capital of Djibloho Province, that day. In his speech, Obiang stated that moving the capital to Ciudad de la Paz aims to place it in a region conducive to establishing a solid security and defense system. Furthermore, Ciudad de la Paz is the “convergence center” of the mainland region of Equatorial Guinea, with convenient transportation.
“This decision also signifies, 57 years after independence, the government’s break with structures inherited from the colonial era, to discard those colonial systems that no longer benefit the nation’s modernization.” Obiang said, expressing belief that this decision will bring positive benefits and ensure the country’s political stability.
According to local media reports, the relocation of all administrative services to the new capital is expected to take one year.
Ciudad de la Paz
“Ciudad de la Paz” (City of Peace) is the planned future capital city of Equatorial Guinea, intended to replace Malabo on the mainland. Its construction began in the 2010s as a government initiative to decentralize administration and foster economic development in the country’s interior. While still largely under development, it represents a major modern urban project aimed at becoming a new political and administrative center.
Equatorial Guinea
Equatorial Guinea is a small Central African nation consisting of a mainland region (Río Muni) and several islands, including Bioko where the capital, Malabo, is located. Its modern history is marked by Spanish colonization from the late 18th century until independence in 1968, followed by the lengthy and repressive rule of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo since 1979. The country is known for its significant oil reserves, tropical rainforests, and a cultural blend of indigenous Bantu, Spanish, and other African influences.
Djibloho Province
Djibloho is a province in Equatorial Guinea, created in 2017 and serving as the country’s newest administrative division. It was established to become the future political and administrative capital, with the city of Ciudad de la Paz (formerly Oyala) being developed within it to eventually replace Malabo as the national capital. The province’s history is therefore very recent, defined by its planned role in centralizing government functions on the mainland.
Malabo
Malabo is the capital city of Equatorial Guinea, located on the northern coast of Bioko Island. Founded by the British in 1827 as Port Clarence, it later became a Spanish colonial administrative center and was renamed Santa Isabel before adopting its current name after independence in 1968. Today, it is a major port city known for its Spanish colonial architecture and as a hub for the country’s oil industry.
