NEW YORK – A section of a street in New York City, USA, has been named after Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, honoring the legacy of the ninth Sikh Guru’s “sacrifice, compassion, and steadfast commitment to justice.”
A former diplomat described this move as a “moment of pride” for the Sikh community in a social media post.

The former diplomat wrote, “This fitting tribute highlights the importance of the Sikh community in Richmond Hill and recognizes the contribution of Sikh heritage to New York City’s cultural fabric, where I lived during my appointment as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013.”
A city council member introduced the resolution for the name change in the municipal council. The council member stated that this step would “honor the legacy of the ninth Sikh Guru’s sacrifice, compassion, and steadfast commitment to justice.” They wrote, “The intersection of 114th Street and 101st Avenue in Richmond Hill, where Gurdwara Makhan Shah Lubana is located, will now be known as Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg.” The renaming ceremony took place on the weekend before Diwali.
