On August 8, an Argentine court sentenced Fernando Sabag Montiel to approximately 14 years in prison for his 2022 attempted assassination of then-Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. The court convicted Montiel of attempted murder and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment. Earlier this year, Montiel had received an additional 4 years and 3 months for illegal possession and distribution of child abuse images. The court also sentenced his accomplice and former girlfriend, Uliarte, to 8 years in prison, while another suspect was acquitted.

On September 1, 2022, while Cristina was greeting supporters outside her home in Buenos Aires, Montiel suddenly pulled out a handgun from the crowd and pointed it at her head. He pulled the trigger, but the weapon failed to fire. He was immediately subdued and later confessed to attempting to assassinate Cristina.

Cristina served as Argentina’s president from 2007 to 2015, becoming the country’s first democratically elected female president. She served as vice president from 2019 to 2023.

Cristina Fernández de Kirchner

“Cristina Fernández de Kirchner” is not a place or cultural site, but rather a prominent Argentine politician who served as President of Argentina from 2007 to 2015. She has been a central and often controversial figure in modern Argentine political history, continuing to wield significant influence as Vice President from 2019 onwards. Her political career is intrinsically linked to the Kirchnerist political movement, which she and her late husband, former President Néstor Kirchner, established.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the cosmopolitan capital of Argentina, founded in 1536 by Spanish colonists. Known for its European-style architecture and vibrant cultural life, the city is famously the birthplace of the tango dance and music.
