Negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia began on Monday afternoon (July 28) in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s national news agency, Bernama, confirmed that the high-level meeting had started at Seri Perdana—the official residence of the Malaysian Prime Minister—in Putrajaya.

Earlier that same morning, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Malaysia currently holds the rotating ASEAN Chairmanship.

The talks take place as the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia enters its fifth day, forcing over 200,000 people from both countries to evacuate.

On July 26, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had held separate phone calls with the leaders of both Thailand and Cambodia, during which both sides expressed their desire to push for a ceasefire agreement.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned that he had spoken with Prime Minister Hun Manet and informed the Cambodian leader about the outcome of his earlier call with acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. Trump wrote: “Both sides are eager to reach a ceasefire agreement and restore peace as soon as possible.”

Subsequently, the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand confirmed their phone conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the possibility of establishing a ceasefire agreement and advancing a peaceful resolution.

According to reports from Phnom Penh, in a Facebook post around 2 a.m. on July 27, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that during his call with President Trump, he made clear Cambodia’s agreement to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the two armies.

On Thailand’s side, acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed on July 27 the results of his phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that Thailand agreed in principle to establish a ceasefire with Cambodia.
