The National Center for Environmental Compliance announced the completion of installing a buoy to monitor the water quality of the Red Sea along the coasts of the Asir region. This initiative is part of the Center’s efforts to enhance marine environmental monitoring along the western coast of the Kingdom.
The installed buoy is one of a series of buoys that will be distributed along the Red Sea to continuously monitor and analyze marine environmental data, improving the efficiency of responding to any potential environmental changes.
The Center is working to complete the environmental monitoring system in the region by establishing 16 fixed air quality monitoring stations, two mobile air quality monitoring stations, one seawater quality monitoring buoy, three light pollution monitoring stations, and installing two mobile noise pollution monitoring devices. All environmental stations are connected to a central control and monitoring room at the national level, enabling real-time monitoring and precise analysis of all environmental data from the region under the supervision of specialized experts in environmental fields.
Red Sea
The Red Sea is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia, renowned for its vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and historical significance as a key trade route since ancient times. It has played a crucial role in commerce and cultural exchange, linking the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal, which was completed in 1869. The sea’s name may derive from seasonal algal blooms or the reddish-hued mountains along its shores.
Asir region
The Asir region, located in southwestern Saudi Arabia, is known for its stunning mountainous landscapes, lush greenery, and unique traditional architecture. Historically, it was a vital trade and cultural crossroads, home to ancient tribes and part of the pre-Islamic kingdoms of Arabia. Today, it is celebrated for its vibrant culture, including colorful festivals, traditional crafts, and the UNESCO-listed Rijal Almaa village, a historic settlement with distinctive stone and clay houses.
National Center for Environmental Compliance
The National Center for Environmental Compliance (NCEC) is a regulatory body in Saudi Arabia responsible for monitoring and enforcing environmental laws to ensure sustainable development. Established to address growing environmental concerns, it works to reduce pollution, promote conservation, and oversee compliance with national and international environmental standards. The center plays a key role in safeguarding natural resources and public health through inspections, policy implementation, and awareness campaigns.
