A second imported case of chikungunya fever has been confirmed in Russia, according to the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing.
“During the epidemiological investigation following the detection of the imported case of chikungunya fever, as well as work with contact persons, two more patients with elevated body temperature were identified. All are members of the same family who vacationed together in Sri Lanka,” the statement notes.
Regarding the first case: the patient was hospitalized in moderately severe condition. The man flew to Moscow from Sri Lanka, where he had vacationed for 10 days, and sought medical help the next day. He was admitted to the infectious diseases department with suspected dengue fever, but PCR test results from the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology showed a positive result for the chikungunya virus. The sample was sent to the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology for confirmation of the diagnosis. The agency emphasized that there are no risks of the fever spreading in the country, and the number of mosquito vectors does not pose an epidemiological threat.
“At border checkpoints, the ‘Perimeter’ system continues to operate, which analyzes epidemic risks and helps identify citizens with signs of infectious diseases arriving from countries with unfavorable epidemiological situations,” the Federal Service notes.
Chikungunya fever is a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites; it does not spread from person to person. An outbreak has been recorded in China’s Guangdong province. In early August, the Federal Service reported that the first imported case of chikungunya fever was detected in Russia.
There are about 70 hemorrhagic fevers with similar transmission routes worldwide, and chikungunya is not the most severe among them.
