European leaders intend to impose sanctions against Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to participate in a trilateral meeting with the Ukrainian and American presidents.
If Putin delays, evades, or refuses negotiations, it will serve as another incentive for imposing sanctions.
Following the US president’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House, Donald Trump announced a meeting of Russian and Ukrainian leaders, which is to take place by the end of the month. According to some reports, Hungary is being considered as the main venue for the talks.
- Plans to introduce new restrictions by the so-called “coalition of the willing” (about 30 countries supporting Ukraine) have been confirmed by the British government. Furthermore, the UK Prime Minister stated that working groups of the “coalition” are preparing to meet with American partners to further strengthen plans for providing reliable security guarantees and sending troops to Ukraine in the event of a cessation of hostilities.
- The European Union intends to adopt the 19th package of sanctions against Russia in September. The last such package was adopted with difficulty in July: its key element was a new “floating ceiling” on the price of Russian oil.
