Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended the term of Alexander Bastrykin as head of the Investigative Committee of Russia until August 2026.
The current term of the head of the ICR ends on August 27. In 2024, a law was passed granting the president the ability to extend the term of the chairman of the agency after he turns 70.
Bastrykin has headed the Investigative Committee of Russia since 2011. There was previously information about the possible appointment of the current head of the ICR to other high-ranking positions — head of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation or the presidential envoy to the Northwestern Federal District.
Thus, Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov became the only candidate for the post of head of the Supreme Court. After his likely departure from the Prosecutor General’s Office, “the return of Alexander Gutsan is expected,” who until 2007 held the position of Deputy Prosecutor General, and since 2018 became the presidential envoy to the Northwestern Federal District.
