The number of teenage investors in SberInvestments has grown almost fourfold over the past two months—from 18,000 to 70,000 people. Krasnodar Krai ranked second in the country in terms of the number of young investors. During the summer, young investors preferred stocks—their share in net purchases was 60% higher than that of adults. Eight out of ten teenage investors plan to invest throughout their lives.

In addition to Krasnodar Krai, the top five regions by number of teenage investors included Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov Oblast, and Krasnoyarsk Krai. Currently, most teenage investors are 16–17 years old (31% each), a quarter are 15 years old, and 14% opened a brokerage account at the age of 14. A total of more than 1,000 respondents from various regions of Russia participated in the survey.

Teenagers are much more active in choosing stocks, while adults prefer short-term bonds

Portfolio analysis showed that during the summer, teenagers preferred stocks, which accounted for 71% of net purchases minus sales. In this indicator, teenagers outperform adults by more than 60%. Among the most popular issuers among young investors are Sber, X5, Aeroflot, and Gazprom.

In second place are short-term corporate bonds with a maturity of less than five years (11%). Rounding out the top three are money market funds (8%), which teenagers continue to choose, unlike adults, who more often sold such funds than bought them during the summer.

For adults, short-term bonds led in net purchase volume during the summer (34%). The second most popular were long-term bonds with a maturity of more than seven years (18%). Stocks accounted for only 10% of net investments during this period.

Half of the surveyed teenagers independently analyze companies’ potential

It was also found what inspired the young investors to start investing and what goals they set for themselves. 60% of teenagers said they entered the stock market to understand how it works. Nearly a quarter of respondents saw bloggers and other influencers investing. Another 12% followed the example of adults, and 4% followed the example of friends.

What teenagers enjoy most about investing is watching their savings grow. This answer was chosen by 71% of teenagers. 34% are most interested in receiving dividends. 19% primarily value the feeling of being co-owners of a company and the sense of involvement in the business. 10% enjoy discussing investment results with parents and friends.

Most young investors entered the stock market even though their parents are not familiar with investing. This answer was chosen by 55% of respondents. For 13%, parents invest themselves and help the teenagers understand.

Recently, more and more young investors are joining SberInvestments. Their numbers are growing very rapidly: since July, it has increased by 52,000 and reached 70,000 people.

Seeing such interest, we decided to find out what inspires young people to invest and what goals they set for themselves. It turned out that 81% of them plan to invest throughout their lives. This is a good sign, showing that even at such a young age, they strive to invest consciously and think long-term. It also emerged that most teenage investors’ parents do not yet have a brokerage account. This means that the interest in investing comes from the teenagers themselves; they enter the market of their own volition and may soon inspire their relatives and friends to start investing by their example.
