On August 14, the 2025 Shaanxi-Chongqing Energy Strategic Cooperation Joint Conference was held in Chongqing. According to the meeting, from January to July, Shaanxi Coal Group supplied 9.64 million tons of coal to the city, including 7.91 million tons of thermal coal, accounting for 46% of the city’s total thermal coal supply. To date, Shaanxi Coal Group has delivered over 100 million tons of thermal coal to Chongqing, playing a pivotal role in ensuring stable coal supply during the city’s peak summer electricity demand.
An official from the Municipal Economic and Information Commission stated that from January to July, the city’s total electricity consumption reached 94.55 billion kWh, an increase of 11.69% year-on-year, with industrial electricity consumption at 50.9 billion kWh, up 3.8%. Since the start of summer, electricity demand has continued to rise, with the city experiencing three heatwaves and record-breaking peak grid loads.
«The stable electricity supply during the recent high-temperature periods was largely supported by thermal coal supplies, primarily from Shaanxi Coal,» the official said. From January to July, the city’s coal-fired power plants received 17.21 million tons of coal and generated 40.3 billion kWh of electricity. Currently, coal reserves at these power plants remain high, ensuring reliable power generation.
«In recent years, Shaanxi-Chongqing energy cooperation has expanded beyond thermal coal supply, with breakthroughs in joint coal-power projects, coal storage, and other areas,» a representative from Shaanxi Coal Group noted. This year, the two regions completed 2.18 billion kWh in medium- and long-term electricity transactions, exceeding annual targets. From January to July, ‘Shaanxi Electricity to Chongqing’ reached 1.296 billion kWh, with a cumulative total of 6.246 billion kWh. Several Shaanxi Coal Group subsidiaries in Chongqing have reported strong performance, with increased revenue and profits, while multiple investment projects in the city are progressing steadily.
An official from the Municipal Economic and Information Commission’s Electricity Department stated that this year marks the ninth year of Shaanxi-Chongqing energy strategic cooperation. Moving forward, both sides will strengthen and deepen the cooperation mechanism, ensure smooth coal transportation, advance Shaanxi Coal Group’s projects in Chongqing, and provide sufficient support for the city’s electricity supply.
