TOKYO — The internet has become the main source of daily news in Japan, surpassing commercial television for the first time, according to a survey.

Commercial television broadcasters, which previously held the top position, came in second at 46.1%.

The proportion of those who selected television services from public broadcaster NHK was 35.8%, while newspapers and radio accounted for 33.4% and 9.2%, respectively.

The newspaper subscription rate fell by 3.7 percentage points from the previous year to 50.1%, continuing a decline that began in 2008 when the survey started.

Japan

Japan is an island nation in East Asia with a recorded history dating back to the 5th century AD, when it unified under a single imperial court that continues today as the world’s oldest hereditary monarchy. It is renowned for its unique synthesis of ancient traditions, such as Shinto and samurai culture, with rapid modernization following the Meiji Restoration and its post-World War II economic rise. Today, Japan is celebrated globally for its influential pop culture, advanced technology, and iconic sites like Mount Fuji, historic temples in Kyoto, and its vibrant, modern cities.

Tokyo

Tokyo, originally a small fishing village called Edo, became Japan’s political center in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his shogunate there. It was renamed Tokyo (“Eastern Capital”) in 1868 when the Emperor moved his residence from Kyoto, formally beginning its role as the nation’s capital. Today, it is a global metropolis renowned for its modern skyscrapers, advanced technology, and vibrant pop culture, while still preserving historic temples, gardens, and traditions.
