MANILA – An expected high electricity demand in the Mindanao grid between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday made the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) declare a yellow alert status for the said two-hour period.

A yellow alert indicates adequate supply to meet demand, but the operating margin is not sufficient to cover the contingent requirement.

NGCP, in an advisory past 3 p.m., said available capacity during the said two-hour period is 2,827 megawatts (MW) while peak demand is 2,667MW.

It said supply in the grid is not that big since “11 plants have been on forced outage from June to July, and two other power plants out since 2024.”

It also said “three (power plants) are running on derated capacities, for a total of 638.3MW unavailable to the grid.”

On the other hand, the advisory said “the Luzon grid is under normal condition.”
