MANILA – Tennielle Madis and Stefi Marithe Aludo of the Philippine Tennis Academy secured the doubles crown in the first leg of the J60 PHINMA-ITF Championships at the Manila Polo Club shell court in Makati City.
The third-seeded Filipinos pulled off a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 2 Taiwanese pair Yuhan Chen and Yu-Ning Tsai to claim their fifth career title.
In the semifinals, Madis and Aludo eliminated Japan’s Aoi Watanabe and Korea’s Yesung Choo, 6-4, 6-2, while Chen and Tsai overcame Australia’s Taylah Lessue and Korea’s Seojin Park, 6-2, 6-4.
Third seed Choo bounced back in the girls’ singles and defeated No. 7 Aludo, 6-2, 6-2.
“I think I just won the title by doing my best in the match,” the 16-year-old member of the Destiny Tennis Academy said.
Aludo held her serve at 1-3 and broke Choo’s serve at 2-5 in the second set.
But the Korean, banking on a solid baseline game, prevailed.
“She (Choo) really played very well, I tried my best. I hope to perform better in the second leg,” Aludo, who ousted No. 2 Watanabe, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the semis, said.
In the boys’ singles final, third seed Min Hyuk Cho of Korea beat compatriot and second seed Tae Woo Kim, 7-5, 6-3.
Cho earlier cruised past India’s Hruthik Katakam, 6-0, 6-2, while Kim eased past Thailand’s Ryu Kotikula, 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinals.
Kim rebounded in the doubles event, teaming up with Taiwan’s Kuan-Ting Chen to defeat fourth-seeded Taiwanese duo Kousuke Ko and Kuan-Hsien Yu, 7-5, 6-1, for the boys’ doubles crown.
The second leg of the tournament is set for July 22 to 27.
