Thirty-nine individuals underwent cataract surgery with the assistance of the GMA Kapuso Foundation and the Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation Philippines.

Originally, a larger group underwent screening, but the 39 who received the surgery were those who passed the necessary lab tests and obtained cardio-pulmonary clearance.

A doctor from the Philippine Heart Association emphasized the importance of passing medical tests and obtaining clearance before any surgery. “It’s safe to undergo an operation as long as your cardiologist clears you,” the doctor stated.

One of the beneficiaries, Cecilia Silva, can now see clearly. “Before, I could barely move around. I’m grateful to everyone who helped me because I can see again.”

Beneficiaries came from areas heavily affected by Typhoons Carina and Eateng, including Marikina, Pililia in Rizal, and Montalban.

A cataract is a condition where the eye’s lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision. Symptoms include dim or cloudy vision, light sensitivity, fading colors, double vision, and difficulty seeing at night.

Another beneficiary, Avelina Jamilla, shared that she had lost hope of regaining clear vision until she heard about the program on the radio. “It gave me new hope,” she said.

A medical director from Tzu Chi explained, “It’s a big help for them to know where consultations are available and what steps to take.”
