Around 8:40 p.m. on the 26th, at an intersection on National Route 1 in Shimosueyoshi 3-chome, Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama City, an 82-year-old unemployed woman from Shimosueyoshi 4-chome was struck by a passenger car while walking on a crosswalk. The woman was confirmed dead at the hospital she was transported to.
The Tsurumi Police Station arrested the 31-year-old male suspect, a self-employed individual from Asahigaoka, Kanagawa Ward, Yokohama City, on suspicion of violating the Automobile Driving Punishment Law (negligent injury) for driving the car involved in the incident. The charges were later changed to negligent homicide as the investigation proceeded.
According to the police, the scene was a well-visible three-lane one-way street with a signalized intersection. It is believed that the woman was hit by the passenger car coming from the left while she was crossing the street.
